After training, damp workout clothes and the used gym towel often go straight into a zipped-up gym bag. Inside, warmth, moisture and darkness come together — conditions in which bacteria can multiply.

That typical smell doesn't come from sweat alone, but mainly from microorganisms on the fabric. Synthetic fibres can hold on to odours differently than cotton does.

Infographic on bacteria in gym bags and workout clothes: biofilms in fibres, odour development in polyester and washing temperatures of 40 and 60 degreesWhy damp workout clothes and gym towels smell in your gym bag, and why washing and drying them properly matters.

What should you do with your gym bag after training?

  • Take damp workout clothes out straight away
  • Let the gym towel dry completely
  • Wash textiles according to the care label
  • Leave the gym bag open to air out
  • Clean the gym bag regularly

In short: Take your workout clothes and gym towel out of the bag as soon as possible after training. Let everything dry completely and follow the care instructions on your textiles.

Please note: Bacterial growth and odour development depend on factors including moisture, temperature, material, washing method and how long items are stored. Always follow the care instructions on your textiles.
